However, when reviewing the accumulated research in recent years, it seems there is no need for excessive fear about healthy adults drinking coffee or tea within normal limits.

The latest scientific evaluations suggest that for many healthy adults, up to 400 milligrams of caffeine per day is generally not associated with significant adverse effects. This equates to about 3 to 5 cups of a typical 240-milliliter coffee.

Moreover, it has been reported that people who drink coffee or tea in moderation tend to have lower incidences of heart disease, stroke, heart failure, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and some arrhythmias.

However, it must be noted that saying "up to 5 cups a day is safe" does not mean "you should drink 5 cups for health."


"Up to 400mg" is not a recommended amount but a guideline for the upper limit.

Individual differences are larger than imagined
